Forty Years in Scotland Yard: A Life Record in Criminal Investigation

About this book

Frederick Porter Wensley looks back on four decades that carried him from patrol work in Lambeth and Whitechapel to senior command in Scotland Yard's Criminal Investigation Department. His memoir enters the practical world behind famous cases: patient observation, knowledge of neighbourhoods, the handling of informants, courtroom preparation, and the long discipline required to identify offenders. Jack the Ripper's shadow, the Siege of Sidney Street, and organized crime in London's East End form part of a broader record of changing police work. Wensley writes without romantic disguise, combining institutional history, personal judgment, and dry humour in a firsthand account of justice tested on the street.
