Carnacki the Ghost-Finder

About this book

Carnacki investigates hauntings with an unusual combination of modern apparatus and ancient defensive knowledge. Cameras, electrical devices, protective circles, manuscripts, and disciplined observation enter castles and sealed rooms disturbed by impossible hoofbeats, whistles, moving doors, and presences that resist ordinary explanation. William Hope Hodgson preserves ambiguity by allowing some cases to end in fraud while others open onto terrifying dimensions beyond human control. Each adventure is later recounted to four silent guests, giving the stories the intimacy of testimony and the tension of evidence examined after danger. The collection helped shape the occult detective and remains distinctive for treating skepticism and supernatural fear as partners rather than opposites.
