The Willows

About this book

Two canoe travellers camp on a small island in the Danube where dense willows seem to lean, listen, and rearrange the dimensions of the landscape. Wind, footprints, missing equipment, and strange funnel-shaped marks gradually undermine every natural explanation. Algernon Blackwood locates terror in a wilderness that is neither evil nor human, but open to immense forces whose presence makes the visitors feel dangerously insignificant. The companions respond differently, one with intellectual sensitivity and the other with practical resistance, yet both sense that the island may require a sacrifice. The Willows remains a landmark of cosmic horror because atmosphere becomes evidence before any monster can be named.
