Zine

About this book

In the isolation of the Sahara, twenty-year-old Zine shaves her head and wears a man's gandoura as armour against a world that treats her femininity as danger. She tends goats under the protection of an aging sheikh versed in scripture and the spirits, until curiosity leads her to steal an old manuscript from his wooden chest. Forbidden names open a breach between visible life and the unseen. Gnawa music, possession, desert prayer, and buried family truths draw Zine toward a reckoning with identity and repressed desire. Aboumejd Abdelaziz blends magical realism and mystery in a story where freedom awakens what tradition tried to seal.
