Telemachus

About this book

Telemachus leaves Ithaca in search of his absent father and the knowledge required to govern wisely. Guided by Mentor, he passes through courts, islands, wars, temptations, and political disorders that transform travel into moral education. François Fénelon uses the Homeric framework to examine kingship, justice, moderation, luxury, and the destructive consequences of rulers who place appetite above public duty. Adventure and allegory proceed together: every kingdom offers an example, every danger a lesson in self-command. The hero's true inheritance is not a throne but the ability to distinguish wise authority from domination and to accept responsibility before claiming power.
