My Sworn Enemy

About this book

Jean Webster returns to the world of institutional reform with Sally McBride, whose assignment is to bring order and warmth to a gloomy orphanage. Her confident plans soon collide with practical disorder, resistant habits, and a mysterious doctor who becomes her declared enemy. Told with the brisk intimacy of letters, the novel mixes social observation, romantic friction, and comedy. Sally's campaign to improve children's lives requires more than good intentions; it tests her judgment, adaptability, and willingness to revise first impressions. Beneath the humor lies a serious concern with humane care, while the battle of personalities gives this companion to Daddy-Long-Legs its irresistible movement.
