Letter from an Unknown Woman

About this book

A successful writer receives a letter from a woman whose name he cannot remember, though she has organized her entire life around loving him. Stefan Zweig lets the unknown woman narrate from childhood fascination through adult sacrifice, revealing encounters that meant everything to her and almost nothing to him. The letter's intimacy creates a devastating imbalance between recognition and oblivion. Desire, class, motherhood, and memory converge in a confession written at the edge of death. Zweig's psychological precision prevents the story from becoming a simple celebration of devotion; it also exposes the cost of a love that remains unseen and the blindness of the man at its center.
